apartheid publication. Significantly, the publishers are the Department of
Foreign Affairs, not the Prison Services. The photographs especially show a
prison enviroment of an impressive nature. Inmates are shown to be gainfully
employed whilst learning trades, e.g. waitering, tailoring and shoemaking.
Closer inspection reveals strict segregation in training and on the sports
field. Even though the publication was intended to present a positive view of
South Africa, pictures show black inmates sleeping on the floor, and white
inmates on beds! Also contains a list of prisons and the rules and laws which applied.

The cruiser,
Konigsberg, was superior to the three British East African cruisers. She
was based at Dar-es-Salaam, capital of
German East Africa. Her proximity to the steamship routes from the Cape and
Natal to the Suez Canal, was considered a grave menace. The British, operating
out of Zanzibar, set out to find her. She remained elusive for many months,
sinking ships and undermining morale before she was sunk in the Rufiji Delta.
Her guns were removed and used throughout the campaign in the GEA by German
troops under Von Lettow-Vorbeck.

An important document
relating to the Jameson Raid. Contains the four charges laid by H.J. Coster,
Staatsprocureur of the Z.A.R., against Philips and the 63 other members of the
Transvaal Reform Committee. The four charges related to the raid led by Leander
Starr Jameson. They were accused, as residents of the Z.A.R. of having
"met een vijandig oogmerk, om de onafhankelijkheid of veiligheid van deze
Republiek te storen, te benadeelen of in gevaar te bregen, hebben onderhandeld,
samengespannen… met… Leander Starr Jameson…met een gewapende en vijandigen
troep, binnen het grondgebied van deze Republiek te komen en een vijandigen
inval te doen en naar Johannesburg voornoemd door te trekken.". Some of
the more prominent members of the Committee were tried and fined. Very few
spent any time behind bars for their role in the Raid. Coster was not so
fortunate. He had a brilliant legal career in the Z.A.R., but was killed and
buried on the battlefield of Elandslagte just a few days after the start of the
war.
