Quintessential apartheid publication. Significantly, the publishers are the Department of Foreign Affairs, not the Prison Services. The photographs especially show a prison enviroment of an impressive nature. Inmates are shown to be gainfully employed whilst learning trades, e.g. waitering, tailoring and shoemaking. Closer inspection reveals strict segregation in training and on the sports field. Even though the publication was intended to present a positive view of South Africa, pictures show black inmates sleeping on the floor, and white inmates on beds! Also contains a list of prisons and the rules and laws which applied.

British Field Intelligence Maps

When the war began, the British found to their cost that their maps were of a poor standard. The folllowing maps were owned by Sgt. R.C. Camp  (1869-1947), a long-serving member of the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles. They form part of a series compiled by the British Field Intelligence Department, Cape Town.

An important document relating to the Jameson Raid. Contains the four charges laid by H.J. Coster, Staatsprocureur of the Z.A.R., against Philips and the 63 other members of the Transvaal Reform Committee. The four charges related to the raid led by Leander Starr Jameson. Some of the more prominent members of the Committee were tried and fined. Very few spent any time behind bars for their role in the Raid. Coster was not so fortunate. He had a brilliant legal career in the Z.A.R., but was killed and buried on the battlefield of Elandslagte just a few days after the start of the war.
