Harry Bolus (1834-1911) came to South Africa from England and founded a successful stock brokerage. He also became a director of some of the Cape's largest companies. His interest in botany, and specifically orchids, flowered at the Cape. His first book, THE ORCHIDS OF THE CAPE PENINSULA, appeared in 1888. ICONES was compiled over a period of years. The volumes published posthumously were completed by H.M.L. Kensit and his son Frank. Bolus was very well known in the botanical world and his personality saw bonds being forged between the Cape and many other botanical institutions, especially in Europe. The Bolus Herbarium at the University of Cape Town was named in his honour, and he received much recognition for his work in his lifetime. Volume 1, part 1 (missing here) was published in 1893.
